Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud
The Companion of the Qur’an
Among the description of Ibn Mas’ud was that he was dark skinned, short and slim in figure. People called him “Ibn Umm Abd” – the son of the mother of a slave.
He was the best companion who was knowledgeable on the Quran. He was the best at reciting the Quran. He learned directly from the Prophet ﷺ, seventy surahs.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever would like to recite the Quran as fresh as when it was revealed, let him recite it like Ibn Mas’ud.”
- Ibn Mas’ud (r.a.) said: “There is no surah in the Book of Allah about which I do not know, where and in what context it was revealed. If I were to know that someone had a better understanding than me, I would definitely go to him.”
He ﷺ also said “Learn the Quran from four people. Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, Salim Abi Huthaifah (he was a slave when he embraced Islam), Ubayy Ibn Ka’ab and Mua’d Ibn Jabal.”
He was a trustworthy shepherd. Before he was Muslim, he met two visitors who asked for milk as they were thirsty. He refused and said “I cannot, the sheep are not mine. I am only responsible for looking after them.” His two visitors were the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr Siddiq (r.a.).
He was the sixth man to accept Islam. He was versed in many sciences, tafsir (interpretation) and fiqh. He was an example for knowledge seekers and teachers too. He refrained from narrating hadith out of fear of making a mistake.
He made hijrah twice to Abssiniyah and to Madinah. Many fatwahs are based on the fatwah of Ibn Mas’ud. Abu Musa Sha’ari (r.a.) said: “Don’t ask me about any matter as long as you have this scholar among you.”
He went to every battle with the Prophet ﷺ. He would almost never separate from the Messenger ﷺ. Abu Musa Sha’ari (r.a.) said “We thought for some time that Ibn Mas’ud was a member of the family of the Prophet.” Umar (r.a.) sent him to Kufa for the people to benefit from him and said “By Allah, I have given you a preference over myself when I sent him to you. So learn from him.”
He was the first companion to openly recite Quran publicly in Mecca. He stood near the Kabah where the Quraish sat and recited Surah Ar-Rahmaan. The people responded “This slave? Damn him. He is reciting some of what Muhammad has brought.” They went up to him and beat him from every angle until he returned to the Prophet ﷺ bleeding from his face.
The prophet ﷺ said to Abdullah, “Recite the Quran to me.” Ibn Mas’ud responded “Shall I recite to you while it has been revealed to you?” Prophet ﷺ replied “I love to hear it from others.”
So Ibn Mas’ud recited Surah An-Nisa but when he reached the ayah “How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people (4:41).” He (ﷺ) said “Enough.” Ibn Mas’ud looked at him and his eyes were overflowing with tears - (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī, Virtues of the Qurʾan).
A few other known companions who were Black include Salim Abi Huthaifa (the 2nd most qualified on Quran), Zayd Ibn Haritha, & Ibn Abza (governer of Mecca for some time).
To summarize, knowledge (& taqwa) is what distinguishes a person. And what could be better than the knowledge of the Quran?
اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ
“Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. (58:11).”
May Allah be pleased with Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud and all the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ
